Robert Quinn, PhD

Michigan State University

Dr. Robert Quinn, PhD is an Associate Professor and microbiome scientist in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Michigan State University. He completed his undergraduate degree in microbiology at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada and his PhD in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His laboratory focuses on understanding the physiological function and dynamics of host-associated microbiomes with a focus on how their biochemistry can shape the outcomes of these interactions. Small molecules made by the microbiome represent a hidden language of host-microbe crosstalk that has only begun to be elucidated. Using multi-omics methods, culture microcosms, animal models, and microbial ecology theory, the Quinn laboratory aims to decipher the language of this molecular crosstalk and use that knowledge to promote human and animal health. Our group focuses on three microbiomes of interest: the human lung, human gut, and coral reefs. Our cystic fibrosis work focuses on understanding how a dynamic microbiome contributes to the progression of CF lung disease.
