James Shaw (MD PhD) is a consultant diabetes specialist in Newcastle in the UK. He is dedicated to providing personalised care and support to people living with diabetes. This includes the hypoglycaemia risk reduction mentorship programme he designed – My Hypo Compass. This is currently being tested in the NIH-funded CLEAR international multi-centre RCT.
He leads the Newcastle pancreatic islet transplant programme and chairs the UK Islet Transplant Consortium, Quality in Organ Donation Steering Committee and the type 1 diabetes Research Steering Group for Diabetes UK. He co-chairs the Breakthrough T1D International Centers of Reference for Manufactured Cell Therapy in type 1 diabetes. He is a lead investigator for the Vertex-sponsored clinical trials evaluating insulin-producing islets derived from stem cells.
He is Professor of Regenerative Medicine at Newcastle University where he has establsihed a tissue bank including 150 pancreas organs enabling ground-breaking research towards transformative new diabetes therapies. He led two CF-Trust Strategic Research Centres investigating CF-related diabetes His laboratory group continue to focus on understanding the pathways through which scarring processes in the exocrine pancreas lead to diabetes paving the way to trials using ‘anti-fibrotic’ drug therapy to restore endogenous pancreatic insulin production in CF- and chronic pancreatitis-related diabetes.
