Manchester Cystic Fibrosis Centre
Dr Amanda Brennan, Consultant at the Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre, UK, is CFRD Lead for one of the largest CF services in the country. She also leads the Post Lung Transplant CF and Diabetes service. She trained in Medical Science and Medicine & Surgery at the University of Nottingham, UK, and completed her medical training in London, specialising in cystic fibrosis care at the Royal Brompton Hospital under Professors Hodson and Geddes. She was awarded the first Cystic Fibrosis Trust Fellowship in the UK to support specialist CF training.
Since 2009, she has led development of the CFRD service in Manchester, including early adoption of technologies for monitoring and managing glucose dysregulation within CF multidisciplinary care.
Her research focuses on cystic fibrosis related diabetes and metabolic complications of CF. Her early work provided evidence that airway glucose increases with blood glucose and promotes respiratory pathogen growth, contributing to understanding of infection risk in CFRD. She is local PI for the CL4P-CF study, a multi-centre randomised trial of hybrid closed-loop insulin therapy in CFRD, with associated work on glycaemic outcomes and quality of life.
She is co-author of the international CF–ISPAD CFRD guidelines and contributes to CF Trust-supported CFRD research initiatives and educational programmes.
