Thomas R. Ziegler, MD

Emory University

Thomas R. Ziegler, MD, is Professor of Medicine in the Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipids. He has an over 20-year history in clinical cystic fibrosis (CF) research and is the Program Director of the Diabetes, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology Core within Emory's NIH/NIDDK-funded P30 grant, the Georgia Cystic Fibrosis Research and Translation Core Center. Dr. Ziegler is the longstanding Program Director of the Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA) Clinical Research Center (CRC) at Emory University Hospital. He is internationally recognized for his record in nutrition-oriented science, research administration, and mentoring. NIH has continuously funded his research since 1996 (>274 original manuscripts, Google Scholar H index =94). Dr. Ziegler was a standing member of the NIH Nutrition and Metabolism in Health and Disease (NMHD) Study Section (2019-2023) and has chaired several NIH/NCATS CTSA and other study sections. He performs rigorous randomized controlled clinical trials of nutrition support in catabolic states (e.g., CF, critical illness, tuberculosis), and nutritional metabolomics studies in CF, infection, malnutrition, and intestinal failure, among other research relevant to nutrition and metabolism. He has a strong mentoring record of predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees and junior faculty and has directly mentored over 100 mentees from the undergraduate, graduate student,
postdoc, to junior faculty level. Over 90% of these individuals remain in academia as faculty, advanced trainees, or in research-oriented positions at NIH or industry. His NIDDK K24 Mid-Career Award supported mentoring efforts in nutritional metabolomics from 2007-2018. At Emory, Dr. Ziegler has collaborated with Dr. Jessica Alvarez in nutritional metabolomics studies in adult and pediatric CF for several years, and in several randomized controlled trials and observational studies in CF with Dr. Alvarez and Dr. Vin Tangpricha.
