Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick & Royal North Shore Hospital
Clinical Associate Professor Shihab Hameed is a Senior Staff Specialist Paediatric Endocrinologist at Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick, and Head of Paediatric Endocrinology at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia. He is internationally recognised for his contributions to cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD), diabetes technology, and translational research in paediatric endocrinology. His work has helped refine understanding of early glucose abnormalities in cystic fibrosis and their relationship to nutritional decline and lung disease, leading to studies that have shaped contemporary approaches to CFRD screening and management.
A/Prof Hameed was Chief Investigator and first author of the international multicentre CF-IDEA trial, published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, examining insulin therapy for early glycaemic abnormalities in cystic fibrosis. He has co-authored the International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) guidelines on the management of CFRD, co-authored the UpToDate chapter on CFRD, and is a frequent invited speaker at North American, European, and Australasian cystic fibrosis and endocrinology conferences.
His broader research interests include continuous glucose monitoring, advanced diabetes technologies, transition care, monogenic diabetes, thyroid disease, and rare endocrine disorders. He holds academic appointments with the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales, and leads collaborative clinical trials and translational research programs across paediatric endocrinology and diabetes. At NACFC 2026, he will present on evolving treatment targets in CFRD and the implications of highly effective CFTR modulators for long-term metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes. In his spare time he likes to take walks with his family and their Labradoodle.
