Damian G. Downey

Queen's University Belfast

Professor Damian G. Downey is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast and Consultant Respiratory Physician at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. His academic and clinical work focuses on cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and chronic airway infection, with particular expertise in CFTR modulators, infection and inflammation, pre-clinical therapeutic development, and the design and delivery of international clinical trials.

Professor Downey has published widely in leading medical and respiratory journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, Thorax and the European Respiratory Journal. His recent work includes major contributions to the evidence base in cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis, including publications addressing CFTR modulator therapy, heterogeneity of treatment response, airway infection, and therapeutic strategies in chronic respiratory disease.

He has played a significant role in international collaborations advancing respiratory medicine. He served as Director of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Clinical Trials Network from 2021 to 2023, supporting Europe-wide capacity for high-quality multicentre clinical research. He is also European lead for the CAR-CF study, one of the largest longitudinal studies undertaken in cystic fibrosis, examining immune responses and antibody durability following COVID-19 infection and vaccination in people with CF.

Professor Downey’s work spans the translational pathway from pre-clinical drug development and mechanistic studies through to late-phase clinical trials, registry-based research and real-world evidence generation. His research has contributed to the development and evaluation of novel respiratory therapies and to improved clinical trial methodology in cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis.

He continues to collaborate widely across Europe and North America, with a focus on accelerating promising therapies from discovery to patient benefit, improving the precision of respiratory medicine, and enhancing outcomes for people living with chronic respiratory disease.
