M. Cristina Nostro, PhD

McEwen Stem Cell Institute

Dr. Maria Cristina Nostro is a Senior Scientist at the McEwen Stem Cell Institute and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. She holds the Harry Rosen Chair in Diabetes and Regenerative Medicine Research.
Dr. Nostro received her PhD from The University of Manchester in 2004 and subsequently joined the laboratory of Dr. Gordon Keller at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. There, she made significant contributions to elucidating the signaling pathways that regulate mesoderm and endoderm differentiation from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC).
In 2012, Dr. Nostro established her independent research program in Toronto. Her laboratory has since defined critical pathways that enable the efficient generation of stem cell–derived pancreatic progenitors and endocrine cells.
By integrating stem cell and developmental biology approaches, the Nostro Lab uses hPSC to model human pancreas development and advance stem cell-based therapies for diabetes.
