Dr. Canan Karakoç is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Brown Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology's Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection. Supported by a 2025 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, her current research investigates the eco-evolutionary processes that govern clinical responses to antibiotics and why susceptibility testing often fails in people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Her broader research program spans from the molecular bioenergetics of bacterial persistence and experimental evolution to decoding polymicrobial interactions, host-pathogen coevolution, and infection-induced mortality using evolutionary game theory and Galleria mellonella–Pseudomonas aeruginosa models. By combining experimental microbiology, eco-evolutionary modeling, and longitudinal clinical data, she pioneers a population-aware framework that treats antimicrobial susceptibility testing as a sample of a latent resistance distribution to better predict treatment failures and guide future therapeutic design. She earned her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Leipzig in 2019, with prior postdoctoral training in microbial ecology and evolution at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research and Indiana University.
