LL11-- Equity in Every Line: Using Words Wisely to Expand Equity & Representation in Writing

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, we rely on written communication to serve as the primary source of information sharing. But behind every word lies the potential for impact—both positive and harmful. This workshop explores how the language we use in written documentation, and professional writing can shape the perceptions, decisions, and actions of others, sometimes in ways we don’t intend. It’s important to remember how many people have access to the written communication- patients, families, primary/referring providers, research, learners, etc. Through real-world examples and reflective exercises, we’ll examine how bias, discrimination, and dehumanization can subtly (or overtly) enter our written communication—and how to actively prevent that. Participants will gain insight into the ripple effects of written language and learn practical strategies to write in a way that promotes equity, empathy, and respect for every patient.
