Clement L. Ren

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Clement L. Ren, MD, MBA holds the Richard B. Johnston Jr. Endowed Chair in Pediatrics and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine. He is a member of the Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine and serves as the Cystic Fibrosis Center Director at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Ren earned an AB in Biophysics from the University of California at Berkeley and an MD from the University of Chicago. He then completed a pediatric residency and allergy/immunology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. He also holds an MBA (Medical Management) from the University of Rochester.

Dr. Ren’s early research utilized infant/preschool pulmonary function testing and lung imaging to study outcomes in cystic fibrosis (CF) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). His more recent projects include implementation of home spirometry, identifying factors contributing to delayed or missed CF diagnosis through newborn screening, and changes in chronic daily therapies in people with CF taking Trikafta. His other area of scholarly activity has been CF epidemiology, where he has performed numerous analyses using the CF Foundation Patient Registry. In addition to advancing knowledge through research, he has helped advance care through leadership and service in the CF Foundation and American Thoracic Society, where he has served on and chaired committees, been elected as the Pediatric CF Center Directors’ representative, led the development of clinical practice guidelines, and headed quality improvement initiatives. He co-chaired the most recent CFF guidelines on diagnosis and management of CFTR-related metabolic syndrome, and he is the co-chair for the CFF CF newborn screening quality improvement consortium.
