Michael W. Konstan, MD

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

Michael W. Konstan, MD is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, where he also serves as the director of CWRUs CF Translational Therapeutics Development Center and CF Research Development Program. Dr. Konstan is also the Center Director of The LeRoy W. Matthews Cystic Fibrosis Center at Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Konstan received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University. After completing his internship and residency in Pediatrics at The Childrens Hospital of Buffalo, he returned to Case for Fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology. Shortly after joining the faculty at Case in 1988, Dr. Konstan became the first recipient of the CF Foundations Harry Shwachman Clinical Investigator Award. Dr. Konstans academic career has focused on developing new therapies for the lung disease of cystic fibrosis, with a special interest in anti-inflammatory therapies and clinical trial design. Dr. Konstan and colleagues developed high-dose ibuprofen therapy as a means to slow the progression of CF lung disease. His research has been supported by grants from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration. He has led numerous national and international clinical trials of potentially new therapies for cystic fibrosis, and is regarded as a national and international expert in cystic fibrosis. Dr. Konstan serves on the CF Foundation Therapeutics Clinical Research Executive Committee and Clinical Research Committee.
