Beth A. Smith

Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

Dr. Beth A. Smith is Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She also serves as president of UBMD Psychiatry and chief of Behavioral Health for Kaleida Health. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Skidmore College, Dr. Smith graduated from the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She completed psychiatric residency and fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry at UB. Dr. Smith’s prior academic positions include Program Director for UB’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Smith is board-certified in Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and her clinical work focuses on assessing and treating children and adolescents with comorbid medical illnesses, including collaboration with other medical specialties. She is widely recognized as an international expert in the mental health of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) and coauthored international guidelines on depression and anxiety in CF for the CF Foundation and European CF Society, spearheading the implementation of these guidelines worldwide. Dr. Smith is the founding chair of the CF Foundation‘s Mental Health Advisory Committee. She has been a leader in studying psychiatric comorbidities and developing therapies for patients with CF. She has extensive funding to conduct research on depression, cognitive behavioral therapy, CF-specific measurement development, and other key psychiatric issues in patients with CF. Dr. Smith was awarded a $3 million grant from the CF Foundation to lead a national epidemiological study, TIDES 2.0, to assess mental health among children with CF under 12 years of age. Dr. Smith has served in many editorial roles in psychiatric and pulmonary journals and publications and is a frequently sought-after speaker, having presented nationally and internationally on mental health and cystic fibrosis. Recognized as a leader in her field, Dr. Smith has received numerous awards, including the Carolyn and C. Richard Mattingly Leadership in Mental Health Care Award, the Award for Outstanding Service in Psychiatry, the Award for Outstanding Achievements in Research, and the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Education three times. She was Inducted into the Emeritus Faculty Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
