Oliver J. McElvaney, MD, PhD, MRCPI

Dr. Oliver McElvaney, MD, PhD, MRCPI is a pulmonary and critical care physician at the University of Washington. He graduated summa cum laude from University College Dublin Medical School in Ireland in 2013, before undertaking specialist clinical training with a focus on rare and genetic lung disease at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and the Irish Centre for Genetic Lung Disease in Dublin. Dr. McElvaney is a past recipient of the Physician’s Award from the Royal Academy of Medicine, the Canavan Medal for clinical medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and the Sheppard Prize for translational research. He received Ireland’s inaugural StAR-MD research scholarship for his work in cystic fibrosis in 2016, was awarded his PhD on the role of immunometabolism in CF in 2019, and completed a clinical trials fellowship with the CF Foundation in 2022, before undertaking an additional fellowship in advanced lung disease at UW, where he has recently joined the faculty. His prior publications include articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet Respiratory Medicine and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. His research interests include clinical trials, epidemiology, airway inflammation, neutrophil cell biology and cell metabolism.
