Dr. Urban is a physician-scientist whose clinical and research career has been dedicated to improving the care of children and young adults with chronic severe diseases. She earned her Medical Degree from the Medical University of Gdansk, Poland, and completed her pediatric residency, including a chief residency, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan, NY. She then completed a Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by a research fellowship in epithelial physiology in the laboratory of Dr. Bruce Stanton at Dartmouth Medical School.
At Dartmouth, Dr. Urban joined the junior faculty supported by the Harry Shwachman Clinical Investigator Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), a prestigious award given to clinically trained scientists to develop biomedical research careers in cystic fibrosis. She subsequently joined the University of Pittsburgh, where she served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Cell Biology. Dr. Urban was later promoted to tenured Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, where she has served as Division Director of Pediatric Nephrology since July 2020.
Her research program focuses on the molecular mechanisms and prevention of kidney dysfunction in cystic fibrosis (CF), nephrotic syndrome, kidney transplantation, and COVID-19. Her work has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health, the CFF, the American Heart Association, and NephCure Kidney International, which recognized her expertise by designating her a Nephrotic Syndrome Specialist. Most recently, Dr. Urban and collaborating investigators from Dartmouth and the University of Alabama were awarded a multi-PI CFF grant to study kidney health in people with CF.
