John J. LiPuma, MD

University of Michigan Medical School

John J. LiPuma, MD is Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is a clinician-scientist specializing in infectious diseases with 40 years of research experience focusing on opportunistic bacterial infections. His research program, investigating the ecology, clinical microbiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and natural history of respiratory tract infection in persons with cystic fibrosis (CF), has produced more than 300 peer reviewed publications that have been cited more than 26,200 times. His laboratory has developed genetic-based assays for the identification of dozens of bacterial pathogens, contributed to the description of 46 novel bacterial species, and developed novel genotyping methods. Early work, related to bacterial pathogenesis, utilized cell culture and animal models of infection. More recent work has focused on the airway microbiome, using culture-independent analyses to profile bacterial community dynamics associated with respiratory infection. His laboratory served as the CF Foundation’s Burkholderia cepacia Laboratory and Repository (BcLR) for more than 25 years, including building an extensive culture collection of >60,000 bacterial strains .He has supervised 16 PhD and MS/MPH students, served on another 11 PhD thesis committees, and mentored 17 post-doctoral fellows as well as numerous undergraduate and medical students. He served as the Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics for 10 years and has been a member of several scientific advisory boards for the CF Foundation’s Research Development Program. In 2009, he was awarded the Richard C. Talamo Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award from the CF Foundation. In 2015, he was granted a PhD (Honoris Causa) from the University of Ghent, Belgium.
