Charles R. Esther, Jr., MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and Professor of Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). His career is focused on improving the health of people with lung disease, particularly cystic fibrosis (CF). His laboratory utilizes mass spectrometry to evaluate small molecule biomarkers and therapeutic targets, including the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) properties of inhaled therapeutics. In support of these efforts, Dr. Esther directs a CF Foundation National Resource Center for PK/PD analyses, which provides centralized drug and biomarker measurement services to the research community. He also serves as the director of the UNC CF Research Development Program and as a leader and co-investigator on multiple NIH and Foundation awards. In addition to his research, he maintains an active clinical practice and serves as the Director of the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Care Center.
